Every animal deserves a chance.
Uno's Home for Wayward Cats & Dogs was established in October of 2020 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, based in the Birmingham area of Alabama. It has always been the dream of our director Kendahl Schnell, who has a degree in zoology, to start a rescue. The rescue specializes in socializing and providing medical care of animals in need and finding them forever homes. We have quite a few resident rescues either due to behavioral "quirks" or medical issues... Every animal deserves a chance.
Meet Uno! Uno came into our director's life as a foster kitten with a deformed eye and a wonky walk. At just 5 months old, he underwent a triple surgery which included the removal of his eye and a hip reconstruction. Uno has a unique soul and loves meeting people and other animals. Uno loves when new fosters come into the house and is always eager to greet them. He was vital to the recovery of another foster... A dog who underwent two back-to-back surgeries. Their bond was featured in a Dodo video which aired in November of 2020. Uno continues to make an impact here in Birmingham, AL winning the Animal League of Birmingham's Best Dressed in 2020 and Best Duo in 2021. You can find him on the cover of Bham Pets, Spring 2021 edition.
In 2024, Uno's Home moved into this spacious property, now home to over 200 rescued animals. This house serves as the heart of our rescue, providing a safe and comfortable space for animals in need. It also serves as a permanent residence for many of our sanctuary animals. From medical care to socialization, every animal here gets a fresh start while they wait for their forever home.
On May 6, 2021, 8+ acres in the Bessemer/Helena area was purchased for the rescue. We are so excited for what's to come!
